Alpacas in the paddock - a lifestyle choice
Barbara and Doug Lomax of Honeyfields have been farming alpacas since 2003 and currently run a herd of approximately 50 to 60 alpacas. Originally based close to the beautiful township of Te Anau on the edge of Fiordland National Park, Honeyfields Alpaca Farm is now located in Ohoka, just North of Christchurch.
Barbara has a passion for breeding alpacas and developing products from the soft and silky fleeces they produce. She is also the current President of the Southern Region of the National Alpaca Association of New Zealand and is actively involved in many aspects of the alpaca industry. Doug is a beekeeper and always keen to share his beekeeping knowledge (and often a taste of honey!!) with visitors. Tessa the dog is always busy around the farm making sure everything runs smoothly!!
It was logical to call our Farm Honeyfields given our occupations!!
At Honeyfields we are totally committed to breeding top quality white and fawn alpacas with fine, soft handling, heavy cutting fleeces with high commercial value. A planned breeding programme is followed and we consider we are well on the way to achieving desired goals. In recent years Honeyfields has achieved a number of show successes, including championships, with alpacas born and bred by us - we see this as a measure of the success of our breeding programme.
